Extending a residence permit

Last checked: Sources

Short answer

You can apply to extend your residence permit from 60 days before it expires, and you must apply before it expires.[1][2] The application is made on e-İkamet, followed by an appointment at the provincial migration directorate.[3][4] Once you have applied, you receive a document that lets you stay in Türkiye until a decision is made, even if your card expires in the meantime.[1] Long-term residence permits are indefinite, so they are not extended.[2]

When to apply

Article 24 of Law No. 6458 sets a fixed window for extension applications.[1] The Implementing Regulation repeats the same rule.[2]

Rule
Earliest day60 days before your permit expires[1]
Latest dayBefore your permit expires, in every case[1]

Example (our illustration): if your permit expires on 30 June, the window opens on 1 May and closes when the permit expires. Applying early in the window leaves time for the appointment step.

An extended permit starts from the end date of your current permit, not from the day you apply.[1][2]

How to apply

  1. Check your passport. Your passport must be valid for at least 60 days longer than the extension you ask for. The permit is issued to end at least 60 days before the passport expires.[1]
  2. Check your health insurance. It must cover the whole period you ask for.[2][6]
  3. Apply on e-İkamet. On the e-İkamet home page, choose the option for extending a residence permit.[5] e-İkamet publishes sample extension forms, including ones for the short-term, family and student permits.[10]
  4. Pay the fees before your appointment. For extension applications, the residence permit fee and the card fee are paid before the appointment date.[4] See residence permit fees.
  5. Attend the appointment. Since 2 May 2019, extension applications in all 81 provinces use the appointment system instead of post. You must be at the directorate on the day and time shown on your application form.[4] Göç İdaresi says extension applications follow, as a rule, the same procedure as first applications.[3]

If you do not attend the appointment and your permit has already expired, Göç İdaresi’s FAQ says the directorate will act on a residence permit violation.[4] If your permit is still valid, you can book a new appointment.[4]

While you wait

When you complete an extension application on e-İkamet, the system issues a Residence Permit Application Document (İkamet İzni Müracaat Belgesi).[3] Göç İdaresi’s FAQ says this document must be approved by the provincial directorate.[4] The declaration on the extension form also states that the result of your extension application will be sent to the National Electronic Notification System (UETS) address you declared.[10]

The Law says people who apply for an extension get a fee-free document, and can stay in Türkiye with it until a decision is made, even if their permit has expired.[1] With the approved document and your fee receipt, you can also travel abroad and return within 15 days without a new visa. If you stay abroad longer than 15 days, the normal visa rules apply.[3][2] The rules for this are explained on applying on e-İkamet.

What changes in the documents

e-İkamet publishes one document list per permit type. Each list covers first, extension and transfer applications together. Where an extension needs something different, the list says so inside the item.[6][7][8] These are the differences for extensions:

DocumentWhen it appliesPermit types
UETS document: proof of your National Electronic Notification System (UETS) address, from a PTT main branchExtension and transfer applications; not required under 18Short-term, family, student[6][7][8]
Up-to-date Document of Residence (Yerleşim Yeri Belgesi) from e-Devlet (turkiye.gov.tr), plus one electricity, water, natural gas or landline bill, or a subscription contract for new subscribersExtension applications, and applications that change permit type or province; your address must already be registeredShort-term, family, student[6][7][8]
Title deed continuation certificate (tapu devam belgesi)Extension of a short-term permit based on owning a home in Türkiye (for a first application, a numbering document from the municipality is asked for instead)Short-term[6]
Student certificate showing that you are an active student and your expected graduation dateStudents who could not graduate within the normal study periodStudent[8]

Everything else on your permit type’s list still applies, including the application form, passport copy, photos, fee receipts and valid health insurance.[6][7][8]

Points by permit type

Permit typeWhat to know about extension
Short-termThe Law sets maximum periods per issue; some purposes have limits on how many times or how long the permit can be given. See the short-term page.[1]
FamilyThe family permit can never run longer than the sponsor’s own residence permit.[1]
StudentIf you do not graduate within the normal study period, the permit is extended by up to one year at a time, without going beyond the maximum study period.[2][8]
Long-termNot extended. The long-term permit is indefinite, and the Regulation applies the extension rules only to the other, time-limited permits.[1][2]

If your reason for staying has changed

An extension keeps the same permit type. If the reason you hold your permit for has ended, or you now have a different reason, you need a transfer application, not an extension.[4] See switching residence permit type.

If you gain a new reason in addition to your current one, you can either keep your current permit or ask for a new permit without waiting for the 60-day extension window.[2]

If you miss the deadline

The Law requires the extension application before the permit expires.[1] Göç İdaresi states that if you do not apply for an extension and stay after the permit ends, the residence fee for the time spent without a permit is collected with one additional multiple; Göç İdaresi refers to Article 83 of the Law on Fees (Law No. 492).[3] If your permit has expired or is about to, contact the provincial migration directorate or YİMER (157) before taking any step.[3]

If the extension is refused

A decision not to extend a permit is notified to you, and the notice explains how you can challenge it.[1] When an extension is not granted, you receive a fee-free document that allows you to stay in Türkiye for up to ten days only.[2] See refusal and cancellation.
